New to functional fitness? Here's the lowdown on terminology, classes and what to expect from your first session.

WOD: 'Workout of the Day'. The workout presented to the class each day.

Metcon: 'Metabolic conditioning'. A workout combining strength and cardio conditioning, with both anaerobic and aerobic exercises.

EMOM: 'Every Minute On the Minute'. You rotate between exercises each minute, completing set reps or working for a set time.

AMRAP: 'As Many Reps (or Rounds) As Possible' of different movements within a set time.

RX: 'As prescribed'. A workout completed exactly as written, using weights and movements suited to experienced athletes.

Most of our sessions are mixed sex and cater for all ages and abilities. Our women's only class offers a comfortable, non-intimidating setting for ladies to train together. The coaches ensure a friendly, approachable environment for everyone to train in.

In most cases, yes. If you have experience in functional training and are well conditioned, you can join any class.

If you're just starting your fitness journey and have limited experience, your first session will be a free trial. You'll then complete a 1hr induction covering the fundamental movements, costing £45.

'Scalable' refers to the ability for athletes to adapt the workout or exercise depending on their abilities, ensuring it's a safe environment for them to train in.

The coach will guide the class through a warm-up consisting of a run/row and mobility exercises. This leads onto the skill part of the session, where you're coached through the mechanics of movement and progressions in each exercise, followed by a workout.

From this you'll improve all aspects of your fitness and wellbeing.

Injuries are a rare occurrence at Willpower Fitness. Sessions are directed by fully qualified coaches and designed with each individual's safety in mind. Performed correctly, with the right mechanics and loading, sessions result in a safe environment for everyone.
